The history of SIGG Switzerland Bottles AG began in 1908: Ferdinand Sigg, a metal working specialist, returned to Switzerland after years of learning and working abroad. Together with his friend Xaver Küng, he set up an aluminium goods factory in Biel. Sigg and Küng were united in their love for metal and their belief that aluminium was the material of the future. However, Xaver Küng left the company shortly before the company moved to Frauenfeld in 1917. It was renamed SIGG AG Aluminiumwarenfabrik.
From the outset, SIGG sold a wide range of pans, pots, tea cups, cutlery and other household products, including pitchers and water bottles. Over the years, the company has repeatedly succeeded in conquering new markets and new ideas. In 1958, the range included well over 10,000 products! The SIGG bottle was added to the range of household products by chance. While producing pots and pans, a great deal of aluminium was left over as waste. During the resource-scarce years of the Second World War, a new meaningful use for this valuable waste was sought... and found: SIGG developed a bottle!
How it started in bed…
The real story behind the SIGG bottle may not be what you expect: it is not the successor to the water bottle of the 1920s, but to the 'Model 26 1661' bed bottle. This was on the market in the 1960s. Its profile was later gradually taken from the classic Traveller bottle, which soon enjoyed widespread acclaim. In 1990, the course of the future bottle was set: SIGG developed a new shape that is still typical of today's 0.5 and 0.75 litre bottles. The bottle body was still plain, yet the quality achieved the same high level as today.
The SIGG collection is not limited to aluminium bottles these days. The brand offers an extensive range of drinking bottles, from stylish glass bottles to sporty plastic bottles and practical thermo flasks, and various food jars and lunch boxes. They all have one thing in common: they are produced according to the highest quality standards. All SIGG aluminium water bottles are climate neutral and made from 100% recycled aluminium. In addition, all the waste material is reused and the water used during production is collected and recycled.
